Iyengar Yoga, one of the world’s most widely-practiced forms of yoga, emphasizes correct alignment of all parts of the body within each yoga asana (posture). This precision of approach builds strength and stamina, balance and flexibility, and a new sense of well-being. Achieving meditation in action, the practitioner learns to exist fully and vibrantly in the present moment.
Yoga is for everyone. No one is too old or too stiff, too fat or too thin, or too tired. A Certified Iyengar Yoga teacher can guide students of all ages and physical conditions to an experience of yoga which is safe, accessible and rewarding.
Certified Iyengar Yoga instructors are held to an unusually rigorous standard. Only after years of training and evaluation do they become certified. Iyengar Yoga teachers modify the classic asanas (yoga postures) for individual students with the use of props - such as blocks, blankets and belts. Props allow for a deeper penetration into the posture, as well as staying longer.
Iyengar Yoga teachers use their deep-seated knowledge of the asanas to individualize corrections for each student. Students know they are being observed and, if necessary, adjusted. Clear demonstrations of the posture; a well-developed eye; and specific teaching points which awaken the body's intelligence - these are the marks of an Iyengar Yoga teacher.
Students of Iyengar Yoga begin with elementary postures, with an emphasis on the standing asanas (postures).
In time, other postures are added, including forward bends and back bends, twists, inversions and restorative postures. Salamba Sarvangasana (Shoulder Balance) is introduced as soon as students are ready because of its many therapeutic benefits.
Each class ends with Savasana, corpse pose for deep relaxation. Students learn to rest in a profound way, completely releasing the body while drawing the mind towards the peace within. As the student progresses, Pranayama (the control of the breath) is introduced.
Private Lessons on St Barth: If your schedule does not permit a timetabled class or you have special needs or would like personal yoga instruction, please call me to make an appointment. Or perhaps you want to optimize the benefits of the regular class by taking one or more private yoga lessons as well. You can do this in the convenience of your own home, hotel or villa or at our studio. I will bring mats, blocks and belts to you if necessary. Please contact me well in advance during the high season (winter) for a booking.
Pranayama: Pranayama is the regulation of energy by the lengthening and control of the breath. It is taught within ongoing classes. Intensive courses are also offered yearly to intermediate students who have acquired a firm foundation in the asanas/postures. Students must have an established regular practice of Iyengar yoga for at least one year to attend (advance permission is required).
"The hardness of a diamond is part of its usefulness, but its true value is in the light that shines through it." ― B.K.S. Iyengar
With his intellectual and spiritual practices, he has masterminded the techniques which can be used by all practitioners of yoga. "Research based experience" and "experience based research" helped him in evolving this technique which is now known as "Iyengar Yoga".
He has therefore made it possible for ordinary human beings to experience the wisdom of the yoga sutras.
Iyengar Yoga is meant for all and is a way of life. The use of props, designed by Guruji , such as wooden props, belts and ropes, helps the practitioner to achieve perfection in any asana. Regular practice of 'Iyengar Yoga' definitely integrates the body, mind and emotions.
